The Buckhurst St project is the proposed development of 4 major land parcels in the heart of the Montague Precinct – on Buckhurst Street, South Melbourne – into four residential towers over two combined podiums. The proposal aims to integrate the development site into a greater strategic plan co-ordinated with adjoining sites to the northwest and north to deliver a high quality, high-density residential development of considerable architectural merit.

The development response incorporated a collaborative approach in conjunction with surrounding development sites to inform the “master plan”, which included:

– in association with the owners of adjoining sites, an integrated transport solution for the greater development site within the Montague Precinct;

– responding to strategic plans to convert Kerr Street into an open space and pedestrian friendly environment;

– responding to the aims of the Montague Structure Plan to make Buckhurst Street the “green spine”, a highly pedestrianised and primary walking and cycling link within the Precinct; and

– responding to the proposed preliminary placement of podium/tower development on adjoining properties (as understood) and so, considering equitable development rights.

The proposal aims to create four towers containing a combined 1023 apartments, room for 693 cars, and 1,651sqm of retail and podium amenities.
